The questionable status of Ann Coulter as gay icon

The conservative LGBT group, GOProud (could someone please let me know how to read that?) recently announced that right-wing pundit, Ann Coulter will be a member of its Advisory Council. Coulter and GOProud have a history together – she performed at one of their events.

This is a bit of a head-scratcher to me. According to GOProud’s enthusiastic press release, Coulter is “brilliant and fearless” and is coined a “gay icon.”

Why?

Coulter has made no secret of her contempt for the LGBT community – from her support for Dont Ask, Don’t Tell to her opposition to gay marriage, to her gay-baiting liberal candidates, I’m a bit confused as to what gay conservatives find so daring and fearless about her – if anything, I find her to be completely gutless as she tows the conservative line of using gays as a wedge issue.

The only thing I could come up with is that Coulter’s a great way to grab headlines. She’s a master at self-promotion, she’s great with dropping memorable/controversial one-liners and at the same time, she’s very easy on the eyes, so she makes for great TV.

But the rhetoric she pushes is far from pretty – when not gunning for gays (when at the same time, she apparently courting?) she goes after liberals, women and Muslims.

My point isn’t that Ann Coulter shouldn’t be allowed to express her ideas – she is. And I’m also not really taking her to task for her comments (I won’t bother). Really my beef, or confusion, really, is with gay conservatives – why would they get behind this woman?
